Recently, I read something very interesting. We live in a world, not one with two heads, but rather, one governed by pure and beautiful goodness alone. You look up, and you see sky. Sky that is vast, immeasurable, delightful, a sky that also occasionally presents frightening horizons and dangerous scenes. You look out, and you see waves crashing into the shore, an endless flow of current and force...the constancy is simply astonishing, inconceivable even. You look around, and you see thousands of beautiful creatures, ones like yourself, and yet, ones so different in many ways. You take it all in, recognizing too that you, in fact, are a key part in all of this goodness, beauty, and purity. And then the thought returns: this world is not perfect. It is, in fact, broken in many ways. Both nature and humanity bring forth evil. Aware of these facts, we recognize a profound statement: we live in an "enemy-occupied territory." That’s right...we are not a society governed by dual powers, but are a people living in goodness gone wrong. We are not good and bad, but rather are a Garden of Eden with poisonous snakes lurking around. "Evil is not a power, but a parasite." It is not its own deity or god, but rather a fallen angel; in other words, a genuinely good being gone wrong. This truth, along with many other fundamental truths of Christianity, are discussed and logically proven in C.S. Lewis’ book, Mere Christianity. In the 1940’s, during the time of Hitler and Nazi Germany, Lewis gave several radio talks on Christian principles for soldiers in despair. He felt that in a time where evil’s snare was so present across the world, hope was needed. Thus his radio talks proclaimed truth, and were later compiled into this book. What I find most interesting about this famous author is his former identity as an atheist. His stark conversion was prompted by his logic-based revelation of core Christian principles. This very experience within Lewis’ life was a testament to the pure and undeniable wisdom found within this faith. I highly encourage, then, for anyone with even a tiny hint of denial against the Christian faith, to give this book a chance. I suspect you’ll find its statements rather thoughtful, and extremely sensible.

"Enemy-occupied territory - that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful king has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us all to take part in a great campaign of sabotage."

~C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
